lmhewlett's book review was featured in The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.
“The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane” is a loving and emotional story. It’s a very heartwarming, amazing book. It is the story of Edward Tulane, who is a rabbit doll made of china. Edward’s life has many seasons, as he goes on different adventures with different families. Edward’s story starts with an owner named Abilene, who loves him very much. Abilene’s grandmother’s name is Pellagrina, who commissioned Edward for Abilene. Edward and Pellagrina can communicate. At first Edward does not feel a lot of emotion, but that changes throughout the story. Edward loves the stars and always loves to look at them, repeating the names of the people who have loved him. I really liked how this story plays out. Kids could learn a lot of lessons from this book. If you like going on adventures, read this chapter book.

Edward Tulane is a china rabbit doll. He cannot move or talk, but he can think. He has painted on eyes and loves to wear silk suits. He can communicate with other dolls. His story starts on Egypt Street with Abilene and her grandmother Pellegrina, who made him. Edward travels around the world and goes on many adventures and journeys. He meets a lot of new people and sees many places. He loves to look at the stars. He is loved by many people throughout his life and goes through many heartbreaks and lots of loneliness. He has to learn how to love and has a lot of chances to learn. During his life he goes through a lot of pain, trouble and heartbreak with many people. HIs life is like a roller coaster; it goes up and down. I recommend this book because it is very relatable and sad. Edward learns what it feels like to miss people. This book has a lot of emotion but is also funny and full of adventures.

“Wonder” is a heartwarming book that makes you feel good inside that I would recommend. This book teaches us that sometimes kids are very different from others, and that we should not make fun or judge people on their appearance, but by personality. This book is about August, also known as “Auggie,” who has a facial disability and has had 27 surgeries to try to fix his face. He likes to wear a space helmet to hide his appearance. He also wears a hearing aid. He has a sister named Via who thinks it’s her job to protect him. His best friend becomes Jack Will. He has a dog named Daisy who he loves. Summer is another friend of his who sits with him at lunch. The bully in the story is Julian. Mr. Tushman is the principal and he helps August make friends and settle. August has been homeschooled all of his life until 5th grade, when he starts Middle School at a public school. This book is recommended for readers aged 9+. Reading this book with a parent who can explain what August is going through would be a good idea.

This book is about a boy named Harvey who meets a man named Ricktus. He takes Harvey to the “holiday house”, where he also meets a woman named Miss Griffin. There’s also a boy named Wendell. There is lots of magic in this book, including time warping. A day spent in the holiday house equals a year in the real world. Kids who spend too long there turn into fish in the lake. This book is somewhat intense, very original and creative, but more time could have been spent developing certain characters and events. It’s a very interesting book, full of magic.

lmhewlett's book review was featured in Maniac Magee.
This book is about a boy named Jeffrey Magee. He is very brave and fearless and has lots of energy, and loves to run. His parents died, so he’s an orphan. He then lives in many different places. One of those places is with the Beale family. He enjoys being with them, until he decides to leave. He meets a black boy named “Mars Bar,” and they are enemies at first, but things change that later. He also meets a man named Grayson, who became very important to Maniac. This book really deals with race, and how things were very divided. The town was split into two sides: East, where the white people lived, and the West side, where the black people lived. This book is sad in some parts, and very happy in others. The book is a good influence because Maniac didn’t look at other people’s skin color.
